EMDR Therapy

EMDR Therapy

EMDR is a well-researched and effective therapy for people who have experienced trauma, including both adults and children. It is especially helpful for those living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and many have found relief and healing through this approach

During EMDR, you or your child will be gently guided through a structured process that includes eight phases. A key part of the therapy involves focusing on the traumatic memory while following a series of eye movements or responding to sounds or taps that stimulate both sides of the brain. This is known as bilateral stimulation and helps the brain process and release distressing memories in a safe and supportive environment.

For children, EMDR can involve simple and engaging ways to recall and talk about their experiences while paying attention to how their body feels and what emotions come up. Over time, this helps reduce the emotional impact of the trauma and build healthier coping responses.

Research has shown that EMDR is effective in reducing PTSD symptoms, and even intensive, short-term programs like those offered to veterans have led to significant improvement. It’s a powerful approach that supports healing without requiring detailed descriptions of the trauma, making it especially helpful for people who find it hard to talk about what happened.

At Real Path Health and Wellbeing, our trained EMDR therapists work gently and at your pace to support you or your child through this healing journey.
